The new National Service recruits face up to the rigours of basic training at Bleakley Marsh. Early morning runs, bayonet practice, kit inspection and drill all go badly for two section. Their incompetence, coupled with the bizarre behaviour of Private Lomax, land them in trouble and the exasperated Sergeant Butcher finally dispatches them to "the kill village" to teach them a lesson. As the light fades in the kill village, a smoke grenade explodes in front of the young soldiers and the attack begins.
