John Hume: An introduction

John Hume was heavily involved in the civil rights movement which emerged in Northern Ireland around the beginning of the Troubles. He was one of the founding members of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), later becoming its leader and a pivotal figure in the shaping of the Good Friday Agreement which led to the end of the conflict in Northern Ireland.
