Shin Dong Hyuk, who is the only person to be born in a North Korean labour camp and known to have successfully escaped, has told Victoria Derbyshire that the physical and mental scars of what he witnessed will never leave him.

The 31 year-old was an inmate for 23 years in Camp 14, a so-called total control zone camp. He said he was regularly tortured, beaten and starved, and that his mother and brother were killed in front of him.

Speaking to 5 live from the South Korean capital Seoul, Shin told Victoria about everyday life in Camp 14 and of his earliest memory, as a five-year-old, witnessing a public execution.
