Lord Lucas: The parliamentary rifle club is closing its doors

Tucked away in a House of Lords basement is a 25-yard shooting range that belongs to the parliamentary rifle club.

It has been there a hundred years and is closing its doors for the last time. Chairman of the club, Lord Lucas, said: "We find ourselves too busy to fit leisure into the working day."

The club started in the middle of the World War One and was there for staff and members to learn how to use a rifle. In its later years it was used for leisure, and Lord Lucas said shooting was "utterly peaceful" and meant you were "in command of your breathing and your thoughts".

It is closing to make space for the new Houses of Parliament fire protection system.
