Clinical trial subject: HIV prevention drug a ‘no brainer’
A man who took part in a clinical trial to test a drug that can prevent HIV says it’s “a no brainer”.
The study, in which 545 high-risk men took the drug Truvada, found one case of HIV could be stopped for every 13 men treated for a year.
Kevin Parker who took the drug in the form of one tablet per day for twelve months, says he suffered “no side effects at all”.
Mr Parker said he has friends with HIV and would do anything he could to prevent others from developing it.
When asked on 5 live Daily how he would respond to those who say it’s up to an individual to protect themselves, and not for the state to pay for it, he replied “I think the message that went out during all of these trials as well, is gay men should continue to protect themselves in the normal way during the course of their lives”.
