What is Judaism?
Charlie, 11, from Manchester, introduces Jewish religion by its history, tradition and belief. God chose the Jews – but created everyone, so equal treatment matters. Charlie is a member of an Orthodox synagogue, or Shul. Praying with his dad, he experiences a sense of being close to God as well, a spiritual experience. The synagogue shows what matters to Jewish people: the ark, where the Torah scrolls are kept, 10 Commandments in the stained glass windows, stone from Jerusalem to make the building and all facing in the direction of Jerusalem.
He’s fortunate to have been to the Western Wall in Jerusalem, where the custom is to write your deep thoughts onto a note and push your paper into the cracks and issues in the huge ancient stones. ‘We believe’, Charlie says ‘That God reads the notes. And makes them true.’
