Boston marathon: a 'brutal' but 'amazing' experience

The oldest foot race in North America attracted over 30 thousand runners on Monday. The Boston Marathon has been run continuously on the USA's oldest public holiday every year since 1897. Rhod Sharp went along to speak to some of those taking part, as well as their families and friends cheering them along the way.

Among those pounding the streets was first time competitor Victoria, who was being supported on the route by her parents Lynda and Paul – a former British ambassador to Cuba. Victoria explained to Rhod why she’s taking part.

"You train through the worst of the conditions not knowing what's waiting for you at the end, and just cross your fingers, it's gonna be about 49 degrees with some soaking rain, it's not the best forecast we can hope for, but being British, the rain won't phase me now", she said.
