Beating the Old Boys Network in Indian Science
Women’s careers in science are held back by exclusion from informal get-togethers and drinks with the guys after lab hours. Theoretical physicist Shobhana Narasimhan tells Claudia Hammond about the disadvantages her sister researchers face by not being part of the male in-crowd. Based at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore, Professor Narasimhan also runs workshops for women scientists from low-income countries to teach them the secrets of the business of science. Some of their stories have shocked her.
