Depressed philosophy professor Abe Lucas is in a deep funk, having lost all confidence in the purpose and meaning in philosophy, and finding no respite in the copious amount of drinking and womanizing he distracts himself with. Amidst burgeoning relationships with fellow lecturer Rita and flirtatious, brilliant student Jill, Abe happens upon a plan that will give his life a purpose.
