The story of the short wave radio, beginning with Ever Ready's 1949 model for Africa that used aluminium pans for casing. This 'Saucepan Special' was painted pale blue, the only colour acceptable across the continent. Later, the transistor radio allowed us to take our radio wherever we went. Most recently, the Radio Data System transmits an inaudible signal that FM radios can use to display programme information.
