Japan's defeat in the Second World War changed the role of its Emperor Hirohito, one of the longest ever reigning monarchs, from a semi-divine warlord to a symbol of peace and reconciliation. Thailand's revolutionising monarch even inspired a musical while Malaysia's monarchy has included some controversial family members.
