‘It’s important to be unsophisticated’ - Bono and Larry Mullen Jr. of U2 chat to Simon Mayo
Bono and Larry Mullen Jr. of U2 join Simon Mayo to talk about their recent shows in London and upcoming tour: “I hope London missed us as much as we missed it”.
The London shows kicked off this week at the O2 where Noel Gallagher joined them onstage. “The High Flying Bird sings like one,” said Bono. “Beautiful harmonies in I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”
Talk turns to the diversity of guests back stage at a U2 gig, from politicians to scientists, “Our shows backstage are a social experiment, you will never know who you’re going to bump into”.
Finally, Bono describes how “the band cringe when I pull someone out of the crowd on stage!” but it helps bring spontaneity to their spectacular stage shows: “when you have a show that’s this sophisticated it’s important to be unsophisticated in another way.”
