Nigerian human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa was executed. Author Salman Rushdie was forced into exile. Their crime? According to the men’s sons, they were persecuted for speaking out and making their conscience heard. There are many Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) that believe in complete freedom of speech, and fight to have men like Saraweevah and Rushdie remembered. This report examines the work of these NGOs – mainly in the Western part of the world – and asks if sometimes they do more harm than good.
