Beijing: New Home of Punk
Young Chinese are embracing everything Western, even 'anti-social' music
Young Chinese are embracing everything Western, even 'anti-social' music. In fact, Beijing is now being hailed as the new home of punk bands from all over the world. We meet the students – from China, Europe and America – who are creating the city’s thriving music scene that goes well beyond mainstream Chinese pop.
Also on the show, we hear from 21-year-old, Barry Cox, who sings Canotpop, or Hong Kong pop ballads, in perfect Cantonese… in his hometown of Liverpool, north England.
