Michael Mosley on the usefulness of mindfulness
TV presenter Michael Mosley joins Jeremy to investigate the use of mindfulness in tackling serious conditions such as depression.
Mindfulness is a form of meditation for living in the moment. It is an ancient practice which stems from Bhuddist tradition. Mindfulness has been prescribed on the NHS for more than a decade to help combat anxiety, depression and stress.
Is there really much difference between mindfulness and the simple art of paying attention? TV presenter Michael Mosley joins Jeremy to investigate the use of mindfulness in tackling serious conditions such as depression.
Mindfulness can be used as an antidote to the increasingly distracting modern world. Michael challenges Jeremy to a chocolate eating exercise to demonstrate everyday practical mindfulness. Jeremy is asked to pay close attention - without distraction - to the chocolate - it's textures, smells, senses and evocations.
Michael recommends the 10-minute mindful breathing sessions he does every morning, and which helped combat his insomnia and stress. After a 6 week mindfulness course Michael's brain activity in both his left and right spheres was balanced - without the use of medication.
