The headphones that tune into the secret music of our devices

As part of this year鈥檚 Cut & Splice festival in Manchester, sound artist Christina Kubisch took members of the public on a city walking tour with a difference.

Using her specially-adapted wireless headphones, the acoustic qualities of electromagnetic fields (emitted from the likes of LED displays, security devices and cashpoints) become amplified and audible. 成人论坛 Research & Development's Tom Parnell followed the artist鈥檚 steps around Manchester's Victoria Station and recorded not just one but three pairs of her headphones. Here, he has combined all the headphone outputs to produce a binaural soundscape of the electromagnetic fields that surround the listener, complete with a video revealing the sources of interference.

Listen on headphones for the binaural technology to work!

Cut & Splice is a partnership between 成人论坛 Radio 3 and Sound and Music, the national charity for new music.
