Stopping suicide in South Korea
South Korea’s special suicide rescue team is called out at least three times a day to save people who jump off bridges in Seoul. 119 Special Rescue Service constantly monitors the River Han in Seoul to rescue people who try and take their own life. Last year they were called out about 1499 times and saved 639 people.
South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, with someone taking their own life every 40 minutes. Team leader Jeong Ok Hur said: “ More people in their twenties and thirties are trying to take their own lives. "I think the reason for this rise could be because unemployment is very high for young people and depression is more prevalent."
