UK athletics' long-term future has "one of its biggest opportunities" due to the rejigged event calendar, according to British 200m world champion Dina Asher-Smith.
The global coronavirus pandemic has seen both the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2021 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon shifted back a year. There will now be global athletics competition each year to 2024: the World Championships will be held again in Budapest in 2023, followed by the Paris Olympics a year later.
Speaking to Eddie Hearn on the No Passion No Point podcast from 成人论坛 Radio 5 live, Asher-Smith - who won 200m gold at the 2019 World Championships in Doha - said: 鈥淚n terms of athletics being at the forefront of everybody鈥檚 mind, we鈥檝e never had a period where we鈥檝e had four global events back to back - big, exciting global events.鈥
鈥淪o, in terms of the long term future of athletics I actually - weirdly enough - think as a sport it has one of the biggest opportunities simple because of the reshuffle,鈥 she added.
