US withdrawal from Paris agreement makes headlines in China

While many people across the world are refreshing live news pages, keen to find out who will be the next president of the United States, it's a different story in China. Instead, the US's formal withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement has caused upset across the country.

The Paris deal was drafted in 2015 to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change. Countries have committed to global targets on reducing global temperatures rises.

President Trump announced the move to withdraw from the agreement in June 2017, but UN regulations meant that his decision only takes effect today, the day after the US election.

Kerry Allen, China Media Analyst for 成人论坛 Monitoring, says the sentiment on Chinese social media sites is that "the US no longer stands with the people of the world".
