Backbone
Isolated in the British countryside, Alma, a Filipina-British teenager, tries to hide her back brace from her peers to appear 'normal’.
Isolated in the British countryside, Alma, a Filipina-British teenager, tries to hide her back brace from her peers to appear 'normal’.
Alma wants to remove her brace but her mother, Nunette, won’t allow it. Nunette reminds Alma that if they remained in the Philippines Alma wouldn’t have access to a brace and she would be painfully disfigured due to her scoliosis. Alma’s worst fear is realised at a bonfire party when she trips and her brace is seen by everyone. Back home, Nunette removes the brace and gives Alma a choice: she can either leave the brace off and cave in to her humiliation, or she can rise above it by continuing to wear the brace…
‘Backbone’ is inspired by a true story and explores immigration, disability, and self-oppression. The cast and crew feature Filipino people who are based in the Dorset countryside.
