Tipple tax - have women been paying more to drink?

Sparkling wines are among the biggest sellers when it comes to alcoholic drinks, especially among women. Colletta Smith looks at the impact of the Chancellor's booze tax shake up.

The Chancellor's announced a big shake up in the way our favourite tipples are taxed. Currently, it's a hotch-potch system, with more than 15 different rates that aren't necessarily matched to the amount of alcohol in a drink. One of the biggest changes - from 2023 - will be a massive reduction in the duty on sparkling wines – prosecco, cava, and champagne. Wine and fizz have seen the biggest tax increases in recent decades, but they're among the best sellers, especially among women. For 5 Minutes On, the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'s Consumer Affairs Correspondent Colletta Smith has been finding out about those shifting drinking habits and what impact the Chancellor's changes might have on them.
