The sounds and silence of Armistice Day
The actor, Nick Bailey, reads "In Flanders Fields" at the Cenotaph to mark Armistice Day.
The Armistice was the ceasefire that ended hostilities between the Allies and Germany on the 11th of November in 1918 – when the guns finally fell silent along the Western Front in Europe. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is when people across the country fall silent, pause to remember those who risk and have risked their lives - to commemorate the dead of two world wars and all conflicts that have followed. For this edition of 5 Minutes On - we share the poignant sounds of this commemoration - including a reading of John McCrae's war poem "In Flanders Field".
