Ukraine war: Losing Vira, my friend and colleague
Thousands of people have been killed by the war in Ukraine, and millions have been displaced from their homes. Intense fighting is continuing, particularly in the strategically important city of Severodonetsk. Gregory, a journalist from Ukraine now working in the UK, remembers Vira Hyrych, a friend and colleague for more than ten years. He says she was killed when a Russian rocket missile hit her apartment directly in Kyiv. He heard that only one person had been killed in the attack, and the next day, he found out it was Vira. He had thought she was OK as her messenger app showed her as being online, but the rescue services later confirmed that she had died.
"The missile hit directly into her apartment. To the very last moment, we were hoping she was alive as she was online, on Messenger, but wasn't picking up."
