Ukraine war: My commander died shielding me in shell explosion

Maksym Lutskyi, a 19-year-old Ukranian soldier, has been fighting near Severodonetsk where he was injured when a shell hit the building he was in.

In the eastern Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk there's been intense fighting as the Russian forces continue their bombardment of Ukraine defences and civilian targets. Around 10,000 civilians are still believed to be trapped in the city.

Maksym Lutskyi, a 19-year-old Ukranian soldier, has been fighting near Severodonetsk and spoke to the 成人论坛's Ukrainecast podcast. A shell hit the building he was in and he's now in hospital recovering, but preparing to return to the frontline. He describes how the shell exploded and being shielded from the explosion by his commander, who died shortly afterwards. He says that saved his life, and describes his commander as a 'real legend', who had been captured by Russians, kept in a Russian jail, but was then exchanged and returned to the war. Maksym describes the scenes following the explosion, and his attempts to treat those around him.
