Pikku-Finlandia (or Little Finlandia) is a temporary venue hosting large events in the Finnish capital, Helsinki, while the city鈥檚 iconic Finlandia Hall is closed for refurbishment. It鈥檚 a reusable wooden building that includes whole trees with protruding branches as part of the structure.

Architect Jaako Torvinen is one of the students who won a competition to design Helsinki's new venue, which will host the city's biggest events. He says "I wanted to bring a forest to the city" adding "We went to the forest to choose 120 trees". He then meticulously drew each tree and worked out where to place each one.

He says "I was afraid of designing anything on this spot" because it is part of the national scenery. However so far the feedback from the public has been really positive. Jaako says "it must be the trees".

The building is fully recyclable and transportable and it will be packed up and taken to a new location to be used as a school or a nursery in 2024.
