Do convicts in prison deserve better conditions?
Angus, who spent two and a half years in prison after attacking another man with a meat cleaver, is calling for better mental health support for those in prison, saying he feels worse now than he did before going to prison. He tells his story to Wayne Bavin.
Addressing Angus' concerns, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said:
鈥淥ur necessary action during the pandemic saved the lives of staff and prisoners, and we quickly rolled out measures such as video calls and in-cell education in recognition of the impact.
鈥淥n top of this, we have provided self-harm and suicide prevention training to 25,000 prison officers and have recruited an extra 4,000 to help prisons return to normality.鈥
