Liverpool's Eurovision - 'You're Safe Here'
Two years after the city was rocked by a spate of homophobic attacks, how is Liverpool preparing to welcome the LGBT community ahead of one of the world's biggest parties?
The 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest is nearly here. The event is being hosted in Liverpool as last year鈥檚 winner, Ukraine, is unable to host due to the ongoing war. But after a number of homophobic and transphobic hate crimes on Merseyside in 2021, the LGBT community called for more to be done to make them feel safe. So the region鈥檚 Pride group, alongside Merseyside鈥檚 Police and Crime Commissioner, created a first of its kind training programme for businesses, showing them the signs to look out for if someone鈥檚 in trouble, how to intervene and support them. And now the project has stepped up a gear ahead of Eurovision, with more than a thousand staff at pubs, clubs, shops and even museums taking part, displaying posters telling visitors 鈥淵ou鈥檙e Safe Here鈥�.
