‘We always believed’ Spain would reach the World Cup final

Former Spain captain Verónica Boquete discusses her nation’s journey to the World Cup final.

Former Spain captain Verónica Boquete discusses her nation’s journey to the World Cup final, saying those who came before the team of 2023 are 'proud' of their achievement.

Boquete, who captained Spain until 2017, told World Football's Maz Farookhi: 'There are so many women who have been working for years to be able to have a national team that's able to play a semi-final, or able to play a final, or that we can dream of winning a World Cup. That's never happened before.'

Spain had only won one of their previous seven Women's World Cup matches before this tournament. They now head for the final after their fifth - and most dramatic - win in New Zealand after beating Sweden 2-1.

Their historic win for Spain came just 15 days after they were beaten 4-0 by Japan in a group match.
