Shepshed's 'One of a Kind' Watermill

This hidden gem is facing an uncertain future

Shepshed watermill is a little gem that stands in the countryside just outside the town.

For many years it was essentially derelict, but over the last twenty years or so, the family that own it have restored it to fully working condition. They also open it several times a year for local people to enjoy.

That opportunity to visit may soon end though because of the access arrangements that are being put in place for a large new housing and industrial development over the road from the watermill.

A Charnwood Borough Council spokesperson said: 鈥淭he application for the Hathern Road Link was considered by the usual planning process and all factors considered.
鈥淭he report to the committee noted the concerns raised by the owners of Shepshed Watermill.
鈥淟eicestershire County Council was consulted on the planning application as the highways authority and it did not raise any objections on highway safety grounds for the proposed access arrangements, impact on traffic levels on the surrounding highway network, visibility splays, highway alignment.
鈥淭he Plans Committee can only make a decision on the application which was submitted to it. It would be up to the applicant to make any suggested amendments to the proposals and submit a fresh planning application, not Charnwood Borough Council.
鈥淚f someone were to submit a new planning application, it would be considered again following the usual planning process.鈥

A spokesperson for Persimmon Homes said: "Outline planning permission was granted by Charnwood Borough Council for the Hathern Road access and link road in 2019, as part of our Garendon Park development.

"At detailed planning stage we considered multiple points for the junction, with the access point approved in August 2023 being deemed by Leicestershire County Council's highways team as being compliant with all health and safety stipulations."
