‘She taught me from a very young age that it was okay to fall’
British racing driver, Nicolas Hamilton says his mother’s decision to not “help” him when he fell as a child, enabled him to build his resiliency “from the inside outwards”.
Speaking to 5 Live’s Naga Munchetty, he said “she taught me from a very young age that it was okay to fall, hurt yourself, brush yourself down, get back up and keep moving forward”.
He said when talking about his mother’s attitude towards his cerebral palsy “If the parents see the condition as an issue, then the child’s going to see the condition as an issue”.
Nicolas explained that when he would fall in public places as a youth, his mother would sometimes refuse to let other people help him get back up. He admitted that this would sometimes leave him questioning “why can’t (she) just help me?”, but the tough love approach would enable him to have “so much independence” and strive him towards success.
