Humza Yousaf: UK must “stop arms sales to Israelâ€

Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf says arming Israel makes UK ‘complicit in the killing of innocent people’

The First Minister of Scotland has told HARDtalk that ‘the UK Government has to stop arms sales to Israel’ because otherwise it will be ‘complicit in the killing of innocent people’.

Humza Yousaf described the situation facing his wife’s family in Gaza as ‘beyond the worst catastrophe that any of us could imagine’. Mr Yousaf was one of the first UK leaders to call for an immediate ceasefire, but this is the first time he has warned of the UK being ‘complicit’ in the actions of Israel’s government.

Speaking to Stephen Sackur, Mr Yousaf said, ‘the evidence that we've seen certainly suggests that war crimes have been committed’. He cited ‘aid workers killed by an Israeli strike’, referring to the attack on a World Central Kitchen convoy which the Israel Defense Forces called a ‘grave accident’. The First Minister described Israel’s government as one which has ‘bombed schools, bombed refugee camps, bombed UN facilities’.

Humza Yousaf is the first Muslim leader of a country in Western Europe. He condemned the ‘disgraceful terrorist attack by Hamas’ on October 7th and insisted that the group ‘should be held to account’ for the ‘atrocious crimes’. But Israel, the First Minister said, ‘has gone beyond a legitimate response’. Warning of the ‘collective punishment’ of the people in Gaza, Mr Yousaf said, ‘you cannot hold 2.2 million people responsible and use starvation, frankly, as a weapon of war’.
