Manual Washing Machine: ‘I wake up knowing our solutions are making a positive impact’
Engineer Navjot Sawhney created the machines that have so far helped almost 30,000 people.
Most of us are lucky enough to not know how hard it is to do all our washing by hand, but for millions of people around the world, that's the reality.
In communities that have limited access to running water or electricity, women often sacrifice the chance to work or rest because of how much time hand washing clothes can take.
So, engineer Nav Sawhney invented a hand-cranked manual washing machine to combat this issue, and his charity has so far impacted the lives of almost 30,000 people across 13 countries.
Speaking to 5 Live Drive’s Tony Livesey, Nav said: “Everyone loves to feel clean, everyone has to wear clothes, everyone has to wash their clothes.
“Some people like you and I are very lucky, we have access to an electric washing machine, but over 5 billion people in the world today don’t”, he added.
Looking to the future, Nav announced that new support from Whirlpool Foundation will help The Washing Machine Project to “positively impact 150,000 lives” over the next five years.
