Footballers back CPR campaign: 'It can happen anywhere, any time'

Luton captain Tom Lockyer and Rotherham's Charlie Wyke both experienced cardiac arrests.

Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer and Rotherham's Charlie Wyke both experienced cardiac arrests while on duty for their clubs. They're backing the British Heart Foundation's Every Minute Matters campaign, which aims to teach CPR to 270,000 people – the equivalent of three Wembley Stadiums.

Charlie suffered a cardiac arrest while taking part in a training session for Wigan Athletic in November 2021. He was saved by club doctor Jonathan Tobin and manager Leam Richardson, who had recently completed a course on CPR.

"My kid was two at the time – he could have been left without a dad," Charlie told 5 Live Breakfast.

Jonathan also helped resuscitate Bolton player Fabrice Muamba, whose heart stopped for 78 minutes after he collapsed on the pitch during a game in 2012.

"The reality of it is, at this point, is that the person's dead. The only harm you are going to do is if you don't take action," he said.

Tom told Rick Edwards about the messages of support he's received from "people whose kids have had cardiac arrests, all the way up to 85," after he collapsed during a game against Bournemouth in December 2023.

"It can happen anywhere, at any time."
