Saqib Bhatti on social media safety: ‘My eldest child is three, I dread the time when they have to go to school’

Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy Saqib Bhatti talks about phone use in schools.

Ofcom has warned social media sites they could be banned for under-18s if they fail to comply with new online safety rules.

The media regulator has published draft codes of practice which require tech firms to have more robust age-checking measures, and to reformulate their algorithms to steer children away from material they should not see.

Speaking to 5 Live’s Nicky Campbell, Saqib Bhatti said: “My eldest child is three, I dread the time when they have to go to school, and that pressure comes on me and I have to make that judgment and that decision.”

He continued saying that “the Department for Education set out guidance to schools around banning smartphones in schools”.

“I think it’s a very good thing to do because children can stay focused. But I also get parents talking to me about children having to phones for safety purposes.

“The Online Safety Act is really important, and I want parents to be reassured that there is a robust piece of legislation and that we’re working at pace with Ofcom to implement”, he added.
