‘Healthy gut microbiome is closely associated with mental health’

Celebrity chef and TV personality Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is encouraging people with his new book to eat 30 plants a week.

He also highlights the importance of a healthy gut microbiome.

Speaking to 5 Live’s Nihal Arthanayake, he said there are “billions of bacteria that live within us but they’re not us. We are their hosts, but we can’t live without them. If we look after them, they look after us”.

“Healthy gut microbiome is so closely associated with mental health, as well as physical health.

“The vital neurotransmitters, those brain chemicals like oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin, they’re not made in the brain. They're distributed in the brain or released in the brain, but they're synthesized in our gut.

“If our gut microbiome is not functioning properly, we struggle to produce the right brain chemicals to keep us mentally well.”
