Why are so many avoiding the news?

Research suggests interest in news has almost halved in the UK since 2015. We speak to the man behind the report to find out what's going on.

News avoidance is a term we've been hearing a lot more about in recent years. But now a huge global study has set out just how many people are switching off.

The report, from Oxford University's Reuters Institute, suggests the proportion of people in the UK interested in the news has fallen from 70% in 2015 to 38% in 2024.

So what is driving this trend? And what can be done to get people interested again?

For this episode of 5 Questions On, we hear from the report's lead author, Nic Newman.
