France may be about to see the most striking change in its politics. The unpopular centrist president Emmanuel Macron has called a snap election to the National Assembly and the far-right National Rally party are way ahead in opinion polls. Lots of time and effort is spent trying to understand why that is and what the people who say they'll vote for it really want.

One person perhaps with particular insight on that is Edouard Louis. A decade ago, when he was just 21, he published a sensationally best-selling autobiographical novel based on his family who lived in a small town in northern France. He described high unemployment and overwhelming support for Marine Le Pen's party.

Newshour asked him what he made of National Rally's front-runner status.
