The Prior's Tower in the Close is home to one of the finest ceilings in the north of England. It's five hundred years old and is a remarkable survivor of the time when the Cathedral was a priory before the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. It's vivid colours have been protected by thick walls of the defensive tower which is on the West Walls of the city.
