The rise and rise of Oasis in the mid-1990鈥檚 has become stuff of legend and the tabloid interest in their drinking, drug-taking and sibling rivalry was to reach fever pitch by 1995.听 However, there was a brief time prior to this when Oasis were an up-and-coming rock band who still needed to prove themselves musically and Live Forever was their first step in creating their massive success.

 | This ain鈥檛 a song, Mr Gallagher. It鈥檚 a meditation, a moan, a mantra - with a grinding, tarmac-digging, mind-cutter of a melody. Know/Grows/Play/Pain/Rain/Bone all hit the 9th note over changing chords, then I/Play/Live/Die/I/Breath/I/Believe/You鈥檙e/Me/See all hammer the 6th above, also over shifting guitar harmonies. Every vowel sound is crushed into a nasal drone. Finally, 鈥淓ver鈥 hits a 3rd and a 6th over a flattened seventh chord 鈥 this could wake the Pharoahs.

Following on from their previous two singles, Supersonic and Shakermaker, Live Forever next release look Oasis onto another level and became their first top ten hit.
The origins of Live Forever started in the Rolling Stones album Exile On Main Street. While listening to the track Shine On Me, Noel thought he heard the word 鈥楳aybe鈥. With this word stuck in his head he began trying out some chords on his guitar repeating the word.
Another Stone鈥檚 song was also to provide inspiration. Noel claimed that 鈥淚 always wanted to write a song that sounded as deep and romantic as the Stones鈥 Wild Horses and I used that as a springboard for Live Forever鈥.
As ever with Oasis, there had to be a Beatles connection. This came in the form of the single cover, which featured a picture of the house where John Lennon grew up.
