All About Eve's 1988 top 10 single - a priceless and effortlessly beautiful song, simply comprised of delicate acoustic guitar and Julianne Regan's shimmering vocal. Simple, yes, but it fair rips your heart out of your chest, such is its impact. Following All About Eve's return to active duty in late 1999, "Martha's Harbour" is a timely reminder of just why the band were so successful in their heyday, and why they continue to win over new fans by the boatload.

a beautiful song from a band immersed in gothic culture.

Awful. Truly awful; the kind of thing that mid-ranking folkie singer-songwriters of the 60s would've confined to a B-side. A shallow, empty parody.

In terms of public awareness yes it was but in song terms no.Marthas Harbour had mass apppeal to a wide audience which included the casual listener as well as fans who had not heard a song presented in the folky style that it was for a long time. This combination resulted in the huge success of the song..The group had many singles which unfortunatly did not match the same wide appeal but in no way were they not to the same standard as M.H.

Andrew Scully, Edinburgh
Such a haunting song. I hate to say it but I guess it became more popular after the "incident" on Top Of The Pops when the band refused to mime when the couldn't hear the backing track in their ear pieces. It's a shame that it appears to be the only song they were ever known for.

a truly magical song filled with with many connotations for me on a personal level

All About Eve have always been notoriously overlooked. As a singer myself (and part-time songwriter) along with my twin sis, I have always thought of this band, as one of my first influences in songwriting. I first heard All About Eve when they released 'Martha's Harbour'. I had tuned into the Top 40, and heard this song. I stopped in my tracks.

They were so very different, to anything else that was released in the pop charts at the time. They have such a mysterious, haunting, melodic and powerful sound. I saw All About Eve perform recently when they made a comeback a few years ago, they were amazing. I hope they will become more recognised and praised for what they have done, and what they are doing now. I know they will always be one of my favourites. Keep going strong, you are the best!

This song was one of the first to really bring tears to my eyes - Julianne Regan's voice is the only one that could carry this off - the greatest "end of a night" track ever released

Pete, Bletchingdon, Oxon
All About Eve produced some fabulous music, particularly on their first two albums, though they did go downhill a bit after that. "Martha's Harbour" truly is a classic; a beautiful timeless song featuring a stunning vocal performance, but there is much other great stuff on their first two albums. Personally I think this should be much higher up the Top 100 list, but to be honest I was quite pleasantly surprised to see it here at all as All About Eve were a much underrated band.

Glenn, Mansfield
Another truly beautiful and classic song yet "Martha's Harbour" is so undervalued and often forgotten which is just tragic.
