World War 1 medals online
Listener's query
"My father won the Military Medal and bar in the First World War. Is there a way of finding out about it without going to The National Archives?"
Brief summary
The National Archives' Medal Rolls Index has now been put on the internet. The Index was created by the Army Medal Office towards the end of the First World War and it includes all of the details about an individual's entitlement to medals, their rank or ranks, the unit or units they served in, the first operational theatre they served in and, most importantly, the original medal roll references. This means that the medal records of more than 5 million men and women who served in the First World War are now available online. The records include campaign medals and medals for gallantry, and apply to service in the Army and the Royal Flying Corps (RFC).
The World War One Medal Cards, held at The National Archives, Kew, provide the closest thing there is to a 'roll-call' of all those who served in the Army and Royal Flying Corps in the Great War, as every individual who served abroad in these services was entitled to one or more campaign medals. People from all walks of life are represented: officers and soldiers, civilians whose jobs took them into the war and thousands of people from Commonwealth countries.
William Spencer, military historian at The National Archives, told Making History that, using their DocumentsOnline service, "people all over the world can search and download digital images of original documents for 拢3.50 - that's cheaper than a trip to Kew for most people."
