The Death of Disraeli
In 1880 Gladstone became Prime Minister. Victoria was disappointed she only wanted Disraeli. She tried at first to call Lord Hartington who had been leader of the Liberals during Gladstone's retirement but in the end she had no choice but to call Gladstone.
Gladstone realised that British farmers were having hard times. They had experienced four bad harvests due to weather conditions. Gladstone replaced the Malt Tax with a tax increase on beer and Income Tax.
In 1881 Benjamin Disraeli died.
