Rebellion in Russia & Balfour Resigns
1905 saw the first major revolution in Russia. In London Balfour and Chamberlain joined forces against the Liberal Free Traders. The Liberals forced a vote and Balfour resigned and the Liberal leader Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman became Prime Minister on a point of constitutional procedure.
Alfred Einstein published his theory of relativity and the first aspirins went on sale. Binet introduced his Intelligence Test. Two Frenchmen flew over the Channel in a hot-air balloon landing at Crystal Palace. By popular request, Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes returned from the dead in 1905

An outbreak of typhus in London's East End in 1905 reminds us that conditions in the inner city were wretched. This followed an outbreak of smallpox in 1904.
