The Turning of the Tide and the Beveridge Report
In 1943 General Dwight D Eisenhower was appointed to plan the Normandy invasion. It would not happen for another 18 months but the general feeling was one of optimism.
At home Sir William Beveridge presented his cradle-to-the-grave report on the future of social security. He suggested a nationally supplied health service with a private medical service option. Beveridge's first interest, however, was unemployment, although his views were not followed by the Government.
