Camp David, Devolution, and a Polish Pope
In 1978 Jimmy Carter negotiated peace between Egypt and Israel - The Camp David Agreement was signed in the following year. President Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minister Begin of Israel were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
There was no peace for Northern Ireland that year - the bombing campaigned increased.
Callaghan's constitutional conundrum was devolution. His party was split and although a Bill was introduced it never went through the Commons.

KAROL WOJTYLA, POPE JOHN PAUL II (b 1920)- Born near Krakow, Poland
- Became a priest in 1942
- Professor of Moral Philosophy in Krakov and Archbishop of Metropolitan Krakov in 1964
- Made a cardinal in 1967
- Numerous works include Freedom Of Renewal (1972), plays and poetry
- Elected Pope in 1978
- The first non-Italian Pope since the 16th Century
- Took the name John Paul II, his predecessor John Paul I died within 33 days of becoming Pope
- His public support of the Solidarity movement in his native Poland added to its international legitimacy
In July 1978 Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby was born in Oldham District General Hospital.
