The Battle of Hastings
William, Duke of Normandy was a master of war. On Thursday 28th September 1066 he landed in Sussex to claim the throne of England. His claim came through his father's sister, Emma of Normandy who was Edward the Confessor's mother.
Harold I had to return south from Stamford Bridge. William's army was prepared, Harold's travel weary and though William's was the smaller force he had the advantage of mounted knights and well trained archers. Harold only had foot soldiers.
William was victorious and the Norman Conquest of England had begun.

BISHOP ODO OF BAYEUX (c. 1030-1097)- The half brother of William I
- Appointed bishop of Bayeux in 1049, aged 19
- Fought at Hastings and commissioned the Bayeux Tapestry which depicts Odo as central to the planning of the campaign
- William left Odo to continue the Conquest and he became Earl of Kent in the 1070s
- Later, Odo championed Robert II of Normandy, William's eldest son, and led the 1088 rebellion against William II, Rufus, but was defeated
William the Conqueror was the son of Robert I of Normandy and a beautiful tanner's daughter. He was born out of wedlock and his bastard status embittered and hardened him.
