Lionel Kelleway and Ian Wallace look for caddisfly larvae in Lake Windermere |
The Underwater Architects
Messing about in rivers and ponds is a pastime that many of us will have experience of as a child.听 This week Lionel gets wet to bring us one of the creatures we might have come across during these watery forays, the Caddisfly.
Joining him on Lake Windermere is Caddis expert Ian Wallace from Liverpool Museum who guides Lionel through these curious insects.
At a larval stage Caddisflies live in lakes, ponds and rivers and are distinct as small creatures that live in intricately constructed cases often out of twigs or gravel.
Lionel discovers not only the surprising nature of their self built homes but he also finds out that Caddisfly make a whole host of other structures from complicated nets to tangle traps in which to catch their food.听 To add to this Ian tells Lionel how some people are actually using the building skills of Caddisflies to create jewellery out of gold leaf and pearls!
