Air Pollution
The hot summer of 2003 produced record levels of air pollution.
In August the ozone levels were so high that there was a photochemical smog over London, which caused problems for people with breathing difficulties. Some of the deaths during the heatwave have been attributed to the poor air quality.
Ozone is produced when sunlight reacts with polluting gases created mainly by vehicle exhausts. But pollution is no respecter of boundaries and pollutants from Asia may be causing asthma attacks in the UK.
Quentin Cooper talks to environmental scientists Professor Nigel Bell of Imperial College and Professor Mike Pilling of Leeds University about the quality of the air we breathe.
Human Evolution
Humans dominate the earth now, but it's easy to forget that our species - homo sapiens - has existed for just 160 000 years.
When our ancestors first evolved they shared the planet with other human like species, such as the Neanderthals.
Quentin Cooper talks to Professor Chris Stringer of the Natural History Museum in London and Dr Ian Tattersall of the American Museum of Natural History in New York about how we came to rule the world.
They discuss how they have pieced together the story of modern man from fossils and artefacts found over all over the world.
