Meteors & Climate Change

The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks next week. Sky watchers will be able to see up to 200 meteors an hour.

Meanwhile, a new radar based in Antarctica is monitoring the 4,000 meteors a day that travel through the mesosphere - where Earth's atmosphere meets space.

The data could give atmospheric scientists vital clues about climate change.

This week Quentin Cooper talks to Prof Nick Mitchell, from the University of Bath, about using radar to track meteors in the mesosphere. They'll also be joined by Prof John Plane who studies the metals released by meteor smoke.

Bad Breath Bacteria

The human mouth makes a desirable home for over 700 species of bacteria. Some of these uninvited guests make pungent sulphur compounds, more commonly known as bad breath.

A team from Kings College London have discovered a strain of bacteria that mop-up the bad odour. Could this pave the way for a natural probiotic mouthwash?

Leading Quentin through the good, the bad and the downright stinky are Dr Ann Wood from King's and Dr Marcello Riggio from Glasgow University's Dental School.
