Explore The Material World with the Earthquakes

The prediction of earthquakes is of vital importance to prevent humanitarian disasters but an accurate technique for determining where and when they will occur has so far eluded seismologist's geologists and disaster planners.

Now scientists are developing new integrated technologies which they hope will lead to more accurate earthquake predictions.

Professor Paul Cross from the department of Geomatic Engineering at University College London is using satellite technology to examine the earth's seismic activity from space.

As well as acting as an early warning system for earthquakes, data from this remote sensing technique could also help planners on the ground to move people before the earthquake strikes and prevent humanitarian disasters such as the recent Kashmir earthquake.

And by looking at the geological events taking place under the ground together with information from how past quakes occurred, Dr Mike Petterson Assistant Director at the British Geological Survey is helping to devise an approach to limit the damage and loss of life caused by earthquakes. Alien Abduction

New research suggests that the experience reported as alien abduction may be due in part to a merging of conscious and unconscious thought processes.

In many cultures people report being abducted in their sleep, by a range of nocturnal spirit creatures from grim reaper type characters to teams of babies and aliens.

Chris French from London's Goldsmiths College听has been looking at the phenomenon, how it may be linked to a condition known as sleep paralysis and its correlation with other psychic beliefs.

Nick Pope former head of the ministry of Defence UFO project also Joins Quentin Cooper in this week's programme, to discuss whether or not there's really anything out there.
